CAHPS® Hospital Survey (HCAHPS) Training Information
Training
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering both Introduction to HCAHPS AND HCAHPS Update Training sessions to hospitals and survey vendors participating in the CAHPS®1 Hospital Survey (also known as Hospital CAHPS or HCAHPS; CAHPS is an acronym for "Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems"). Introduction to HCAHPS Training is scheduled for January 28 and 29, 2008, and HCAHPS Update Training is scheduled for January 30 and 31, 2008. Both trainings will be conducted via Webinar for those hospitals/survey vendors approved to participate in HCAHPS Data Collection and Public Reporting, and for those hospitals/survey vendors wanting to join HCAHPS. Note: Hospitals that have contracted with a survey vendor to collect HCAHPS survey data are not required to attend training, but are welcome to do so, space permitting.

Participation
To participate in HCAHPS Data Collection and Public Reporting, all self-administering hospitals, hospitals administering the survey for multiple sites, and survey vendors must meet certain Program Requirements and must participate in the Introduction to HCAHPS Training.

New hospitals intending to conduct the survey on their own and newly applying survey vendors are required to participate in two half-day Introduction to HCAHPS Webinar Training sessions (one of Session 1 and one of Session 2).

Self-administering hospitals and survey vendors that are currently participating in HCAHPS Data Collection and Public Reporting are required to participate in one HCAHPS Update Training session. (Self-administering hospitals and survey vendors that are currently participating in HCAHPS Data Collection and Public Reporting may additionally participate in the Introduction to HCAHPS Training sessions.)

At a minimum, the hospital's/survey vendor's Project Manager is required to participate in the HCAHPS Training sessions; however, it is strongly suggested that all staff involved in the HCAHPS process participate in the training. There will be no fee charged for participation in training. Participating organizations are limited to one log-on access to the Webinar training, with no limit on the number of participants listening in. Below is a list of dates for the training.

Webinar Training
Due to limited availability of Webinar lines, only one line will be provided to a registered organization. However, multiple persons at that organization may participate in the Webinar using a single shared computer line and telephone access. Please be sure to provide the names of all staff that will be participating in the training sessions.

Please note that all times listed are Eastern Standard Time (EST). Be sure to convert the times and plan accordingly for your time zone.

Training Registration will close on January 18, 2008!

If you have any questions or require further information, contact the HCAHPS Information and Technical Support Telephone Line (1-888-884-4007) or email at hcahps@azqio.sdps.org

About the Survey
The HCAHPS survey can be seen as a core set of questions that may be combined with a broader, customized set of hospital-specific items. The survey is meant to complement, to the extent possible, not replace, the data hospitals currently collect to support improvements in internal customer services and quality related activities.

The HCAHPS survey is composed of 18 items that encompass seven key topics: communication with doctors, communication with nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, cleanliness and quietness of hospital environment, pain management, communication about medicines, and discharge information. It also includes four screener questions and five demographic items. The entire survey contains 27 questions.

There are four approved modes of administration for the HCAHPS survey: 1) Mail Only; 2) Telephone Only; 3) Mixed (mail followed by telephone); and, 4) Active Interactive Voice Response (IVR). Results of the survey will be publicly reported on the Hospital Compare website, which can be found at http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/, or through a link on http://www.medicare.gov/.
